White House China Collection Re-Authentication Effort Remains Strong
Woodmere has, in recent years, been working methodically and systematically to improve the accuracy of the designs in its White House Collection of presidential china reproductions. “It’s really been a combination of things that originally prompted us to undertake this project,” says David Turner of Woodmere. “Better research has been a huge help to us in insuring our design accuracy. Also, over the years, our production capabilities have improved to a point where we can get even closer to the original designs.”
With that being said, Woodmere undertook a re-authentication process several years ago and it’s now an ongoing project. “Many of the changes a very slight and on ly true experts in authentic White House china might notice. But, if a color was off a shade….or, a slight improvement in details could be had…then we did it. The investment in authenticity is a long-term one. We want Woodmere customers to know that they are getting as close to the original as possible”, says Turner.
From the detail in the vignettes on the Monroe china (shown) border to the color of the snake surrounding the edge of the George Washington “states” china….Woodmere has been re-authenticating their designs for a number of years now. With 16 different items in each of Woodmere’s White House Collection designs, it is no easy task to update or re-authenticate the designs of any of the presidential china patterns.
Woodmere uses original presidential china from collectors, antique books, and information from the National Archives in Washington, DC to gain design accuracy. Historical information such as the notes from Abbey Gunn Baker, who was brought in by the Roosevelt administration in the early 1900′s to catalog all the presidential china items and patterns on hand at the time at The White House. Even the most recent addition to Woodmere’s White House Collection this past fall – the china of President James Garfield – was made historically accurate by working closely with the Western Reserve Historical Society, owners of the Garfield china originals.
