A Beginner’s Guide To Learning Mandarin
There are quite a few different ways of trying to Chinese language course with some being easier than others to complete. It can take a long time to learn a second language. Below are a few things to think about when learning.
While trying to take on a new language like Chinese, you would have to also take on writing and reading it as well as speaking it. The language of Chinese is used by up to a fifth of the world’s population today. There are quite a few different branches or dialects of Chinese and different types as well since it is not considered a solitary language.
There are some areas that speak this more than others such as Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and some other areas in Southeastern Asia as well as the United States. Mandarin is mainstream Chinese and is considered yet another dialect that is used in Beijing. This is called Guanhua and is spoken in a few places such as the People’s Republic of China and Republic of China. It is one of the only six languages that the UN uses.
To learn Chinese, you will need to decide what dialect you will learn based on where you plan to travel. A few include Wu, Yue, Min, Xiang and Hakka. Each is used in certain areas and has a different amount of people who speak it.
The different dialects don’t have very clear edges and this means that if one word has a specific meaning in one dialect, it will probably have the same meaning in another dialect. Since Mandarin is considered the main national language, it is the most widely used language inChina. If you are not sure of what dialect to undertake, you might want to go with Mandarin so that you get a good groundwork for understanding all other dialects used in the area.
The language can be hard to learn on your own. There are many online courses available and some even offered by the government as a means of helping you become more diverse. There are ample companies that offer tutoring in other languages as well that charge for their services.
For many, the best way to learn a new language is to hear and repeat what is heard. If you know you learn best in this manner, there are numerous CDs and DVDs that are made to supplement this learning style. Normally you will hear a phrase or word said in English, then in Chinese and then you will be given time to say it out loud. However, only popular words and phrases are taught in this way.
If you want to learn Chinese on your own, research your options. There are many places online that you can do this for free. Some are dedicated to teaching a person to write and read the language until fluent and you would need this if you were to travel to a country where the language is used. Another way of learning could be by taking language courses through a community college. You could learn to write, speak and read the language with help from financial aid so costs are not such a big issue.
