Shanghai Yu Garden & Bazaar by Easytourchina
Yu Garden was originally built in 1559 of the Ming Dynasty, with a total an area of 20,000 square meters. The garden is an oasis of greenery and relative calm amid the carnival atmosphere of the adjoining Yu Bazaar, suffered during the Opium War and the Taiping Rebellion, but were eventually rebuilt in the traditional style. Contemplate the Tower of the Happiness or the Hall of Observing Quietness as you make your way through well-preserved traditional Chinese buildings and assorted antique and art stalls.
Halls, chambers, towers, pavilions, rockeries and flowing streams all have their unique characteristics. There are six main scenic areas with more than 40 scenic spots in the garden, offering visitors a different scene at every step.
From the building”Yu He Xie” to”Wan Hua Lou”, there are full of exquisite corridors, rivers, rockeries, courtyards. A lot of brick carvings, stone carvings, mud sculptures, and wood sculptures intersperse among the Yu Garden. What’s more, there are many paintings and calligraphy created by renowned ancient Chinese artists; all of them are culture relics of high value.
Main attractions in Yuyuan Garden:
Sansui Hall
Once named “Leshou Hall”, the Sansui Hall was constructed with five spacious rooms in Qing Dynasty style to entertain his guests. Later it was served as kind of celebration and announcement of imperial edicts.
Big Rockery
The Grand Rockery, made by Zhang Nanyan, a famous rockery artist in Ming Dynasty, is regarded as the best treasure of the Yu Garden and the best rockery in South China.
Elegant Jade Rock
The Exquisite Jade Rock standing before the Yuhua Hall is one of the three most famous rocks in China. The other two are “Ruiyun Rock” in Liu garden, Suzhou and “Zhouyun Rock” in Hangzhou flower nursery.Elegantly shaped, the Exquisite Jade Rock is about 4 meters high. It is a piece of featuring rock from Lake Tai in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. It is featured by its wrinkled appearance, slender shape, transparent nature, and lots of holes due to the eroded by water.
Stone City
It is a stone exhibition show holding a great number of stone sculptures and engravings. It is loved by tourists for its visual arts and human values.
Yu Garden Bazaar found beside Yu Garden is a wonderful place well worth seeing. It is famous for its narrow and bustling streets lined with various shops, stores and stalls, offering trinkets, souvenirs, antiques and all kinds of handicraft. Every visitor is sure to be attracted by the rows of little shops with amazing collections of merchandise of special features.
You can have your name carved on an article you have just bought, you can choose a Chinese painting there to hang at home, or select a jade jewelry or a Buddha statue, or pay for a pair of silk pajamas, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants. Suggest that you should bargain with the shop owners over the prices. It is such an interesting experience that many foreigners regard it as part of the fun in touring Shanghai.
