Oriental Ceramics have long been popular throughout the western world. A lengthy history, coupled with many distinctive styles, makes them a prime target for collectors. But they also make superb decorative items, they are instantly recognisable and set a tone for the whole room. Decorators and collectors alike appreciate their investment value, and original antique items tend to be more popular than new or reproduction articles.
China has been the main producer, with a history of exporting decorative ceramics that goes back for centuries, while Japanese ceramics have followed quite a different history.
The raw materials needed for Ceramics, clays and glazes are abundant in China; the country has a history of making fine Chinaware that goes back thousands of years. Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty in the 1600′s, trade between China and Europe started to increase, and Porcelain ceramics were a popular item with the traders. Almost everyone is familiar with Ming Vases, the most common items at the time, which usually feature a thin white glaze and simple figurative decorations made with a translucent pale blue glaze.
As China moved out of the Ming era and into the Qing dynasty, the ceramics industry capitalized on the booming export market, producing more colourful items that were popular in the European markets, but retaining a distinctive Chinese style.
The different styles that characterised the Qing dynasty, which lasted until the cultural revolution of 1911, are often grouped into families according to the colour palette used. The Famille Noir style used a solid black base, with designs being added using mostly white, blue, and violet glazes. Famille Vert maintained a white base, but the simple designs were mostly done with copper green and iron red glazes. Famille Jaune uses a distinctive yellow background, with green being the predominant colour in the patterns.
Famille Rose is an altogether different style, made using a technique that allowed more detailed artwork. Based on a white background, the style is distinctive for the intricate patterns and detailed scenes they featured. Often referred to as Fencai or Ruan Cai, it features a broader use of colour with intermediate shades, though the predominant colour was usually pink or purple.
The Japanese learnt most of their ceramics skills from China, but the highly conservative and conformist nature of the country meant that the fancier techniques found limited application. Many Japanese ceramics styles are very functional, rather than decorative. Distinct artistic styles have been imposed on designs that could be used for ordinary everyday purposes. Some traditional types of Japanese ceramics are still popular due to their simplistic, yet elegant, style.
Japanese Conservatism led to many styles being manufactured for generations, even centuries, in essentially the same way. Although Japan has produced ceramics specifically aimed at the export market, most producers have concentrated on maintaining the same styles they were taught by their masters. Individual styles are more commonly associated with families or the location were they are made, rather than by the period.
Onda-Yaki, to take an extreme example, is a traditional style that is passed down through families and still made today. They are so careful about preserving the original techniques that they shun the use of electricity. They dig their own clay, use a water powered device to pound it, and the pots are fired in convection kilns fuelled with copious quantities of firewood.
