Western Qing Tombs – The Famous Royal Cemetery by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Located underneath Mount Yongning around 15 kilometers west of the Count Yi, in Province Hebei, Qing Tombs is a burial ground of emperors who lived during the Qing Dynasty. The beautiful surroundings, elegant craft work and the cultural value attracts many local and foreign visitors to the place.
Many emperors and their empresses of the Qing Dynasty, princes and princesses and servants of the royal family have been buried in the Western Qing Tomb. The architectural style reveals the ranking system that was used during the era. The larger tombs here belong to the emperors, followed by their empresses and the others in lower ranks have smaller tombs. The most intriguing aspect of the tombs is the tiles used for the emperors and empresses that have a yellow glaze while the others are covered using green glazed tiles.
The Beilou, a building which recorded the accomplishments of the emperors’, Long’en Dian which is a place dedicated to receive royal blessings and to make sacrifices, Chaofang is the hall where divine food was made and the gigantic gates are all special highlights of the Western Qing Tombs. Each and every one of these tombs displays its own style of architecture that exhibit the ability of the ancient Chinese.
Tailing is the largest primeval and most perfect tomb in the area, which belongs to the Emperor Yongzheng. Entrance to this tomb is through a curved bridge with three stunning stone arches.
Western Qing Tombs are listed as one of the most amazing and valuable ancient cemeteries’ of Chinese history. For people who have a keen interest on exploring the ancient history of China, this is a place you shouldn’t miss. Visitors can easily get there by taking a coach to County Yi from Lizegio Coach Station in Beijing. If you are traveling by car, drive along the Beijing-Shijiazhuang Highway and then turn to national highway 112 at Gaobeidian to get there.
